Relief and rehabilitation efforts by The Kalgidhar Society
in earthquake affected areas in Kashmir
On October 8 2005, the earthquake in Kashmir not only devastated these beautiful areas but also cast a dark shadow on the future of people of these places. More than 95% of the houses were completely destroyed. Thousands of people were rendered homeless. The Kalgidhar Society mobilized its resources to provide much awaited relief. Winter relief material and food supplies were distributed. Major General Chhatwal is co-ordinating the relief efforts with the local authorities. Many affected people had received little help inspite of tall claims made by other relief providing organizations. The Kalgidhar Society is committed to provide all the requested help before the severe winter sets in. Construction material for the houses was distributed in an organized way. Monetary and material assistance was provided to repair Gurdwara Sahib building at Tarboni. Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha has been reconstructed by the volunteers of The Kalgidhar Society.VIEW VIDEO

Local authorities appreciated the relief efforts by The Kalgidhar Society and co-operated with us wholeheartedly. Ancient historical Hindu temples have been repaired by the volunteers of The Kalgidhar Society. Relief to all the earthquake victims is being provided irrespective of any cast, creed or religion, thus following the path of universal brotherhood enunciated by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Members of Bar Association, Distt. Baramulla, Kashmir were impressed by the help rendered by The Kalgidhar Society. They were moved by the fact that the help was provided not only to the Sikh community but to other communities as well, irrespective of cast, creed or religion. In a very short time, 90 houses in Naupura, 195 houses in Salamabad, 213 houses in Churanda, 53 houses in Lagama, 2 in Jhulha, 3 in Azadwara, 2 in Dachhi, 204 in Jabla, 46 in Sangaria, 9 in Nadiala, 65 in Shudhdhar, 8 in Moori, 15 in Baramulla, 25 in Simbalpura i.e. a total of 939 houses have been reconstructed. A school in Churanda was reconstructed and school uniforms along with school bags were provided to all the students. Construction material and monetary help was provided to three Mosques in Simbalpura & Tarboni and Jama Masjid in Salamabad. One ancient historial Hindu temple 'Pandav Mandir' in Lagama was reconstructed. Four Gurdwaras; Sri Guru Singh Sabha at Simbalpura, Tarboni, Lagama and Naupura were reconstructed.
The total expenses incurred by The Kalgidhar Society as on November 25, 2005 is Rs. 10 Million (USD 250,000 approx.). Future cost estimate to complete the relief efforts is about Rs. 90 Million (USD 2,250,000 approx.). We humbly request you to donate generously for this humanitarian cause.
