Several plastic surgeries performed in the free medical camp at Baru Sahib

The Kalgidhar Society, Baru Sahib organized a free medical camp on 6-7 April, 2007 on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi. The medical camp, organized at Akal Charitable Hospital, was attended by specialists and super-specialists from Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Mumbai, who provided their services to the rural, poor and underprivileged people of the remote Himalayan region virtually at their doorsteps.

In addition to the usual medical professionals from all parts of India, three eminent doctors from USA also participated in this year’s camp. The doctors from USA were; (i) Dr. Jasjeet Kaur Atwal (Anaesthetic), Baltimore, (ii) Dr. Gurpal Singh Bhuller (Orthopaedic Surgeon) Richmond, Virginia, (iii) Dr. Rameet Kaur (Gynecologist) Baltimore.

The proceedings commenced with the Ardas and felicitation of participating doctors and para-medical staff by giving them siropa by revered Baba Iqbal Singh Ji in the Darbar Hall.

The camp was inaugurated at the Akal Charitable Hospital by Mr. B.C. Negi, former Chief Secretary, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh. While speaking on the occasion, he said, “It is a second surprise for me today. The first one was few months back when I was amazed to see the sea-change in the development that Baru Sahib has gone through all these years. I could not believe that it is the same Baru Sahib which I visited way back in 1965 when it was a one-room Gurdwara under a walnut tree. And today again, I am overwhelmed to see such a large number of patients who have come here covering long distances to benefit from this medical camp. When I was told by Dr. Davinder Singh Ji about this medical camp, I thought that it would be a very small camp attended by few patients in this remote area. I am awestruck by the number of surgeries, including plastic surgeries, to be performed in this far-flung area.”

Later in the day, the camp was also visited by Mr. Gangu Ram Musafir, Speaker of Assembly, Himachal Pradesh. He interacted with many patients while on his tour of the medical camp.

A team of about 100 Medical and Para-Medical professionals comprising of ENT Specialists, Surgeons, Physicians, Dental Specialists, Child Specialists, Psychiatrists, Gynecologists, Ortho (Bones, Joints) Specialists and Skin Specialists, participated in the camp. About 1600 patients were attended in the O.P.D. and 85 surgeries were performed. Hearing Aid machines were also distributed by The Kalgidhar Society on this occasion.

Akal Charitable Hospital is a 200-bed hospital located at Baru Sahib, Distt. Sirmour, Himachal Pradesh. It is providing medical care to poor patients of this remote, rural and backward region. This hospital caters to the medical needs of patients covering an area of a radius of 100 Km. that includes Nohradhar, Sangraha, Habban, Rajgarh, Haripurdhar, Chopal, Renuka, Kupvi as well as Jubbal and Kotkhai. In addition to the routine medical and surgical services, emergencies of all kinds are also attended. Akal Charitable Hospital is the only hospital in the region attending to the patients of snake-bite for which expensive antivenin is given. Regular free medical camps are organized by Akal Charitable Hospital twice a year in the months of April and September.

Free Plastic Surgery to the needy

Kalgidhar Trust organizes two-day medical camp

Tapo-Bhoomi Baru Sahib has created a history in the field of medical services in Himachal Pradesh. Believe it or not, Baru Sahib, situated in Rajgarh sub-division, is providing free-of-cost plastic surgery facility to the poor patients in the medical camps, being held twice a year.

On visiting the free medical camp, ‘Divya Himachal’ correspondent discovered that poor children and women were being registered for surgeries which would cost 2 to 3 lakhs in the metropolitan cities.

10-month old Twinkle, son of Mrs. Kamlesh of village Sanio Deedag of Rajgarh, got a new life in this camp. Twinkle had already undergone surgery in the last year’s camp. Kamlesh got very emotional when she said that her son had a cleft-lip and palate. With this second surgery, Twinkle would be normal like other kids.

Same is the case with 12-year old Maan Singh who is undergoing plastic surgery for the second time.

With little service of plastic surgery available in the state, officials of the health department were surprised to know that The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib, was providing modern health services free-of-cost in the interiors of the district. Interacting with the press, 12-year old Maan Singh said that the doctors at the camp had performed plastic surgery on him in the last medical camp. This year, the doctors will perform a second surgery on him. He said that he was so happy to be normal due to the efforts of The Kalgidhar Trust.

This camp was of special significance for the local people as they came to know that three doctors from USA are also providing their services. The Kalgidhar Trust is spending lakhs of rupees in this camp on the treatment of poor patients, which include the costly plastic surgery. Nine-month old Suraj of village Panva of Sarahan, got a new face in this camp through plastic surgery. His mother, Sunita Devi, told this correspondent that Suraj had a cleft-lip since his birth and he has undergone plastic surgery for the first time. Reshma of village Ghanduri of Haripur Dhar area also underwent plastic surgery for the first time. This correspondent also spoke to four parents who had abandoned any hope of treatment of their kids due to severe financial crisis. A total of 9 patients underwent plastic surgery in this two-day camp.
