"Akal Samaj Sudhar Sangat - A Crusade against Social Evils"

Akal Samaj Sudhar Sangat is being run by The Kalgidhar Society at Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Cheema Sahib, place of birth of Sant Attar Singh Ji. The dual benefit is achieved by the selfless activities of propagation of Gurmat through Gurbani Kirtan and campaign against female foeticide and drug-addiction.

As the Sangat in this rural area has gone astray from Sikhism, this organization has started performing Asa Di Var in the house-holds of the villagers in the ambrosial hours. All the expenses of the proceedings (Prashad, Langar, Sound System etc.) are borne and arranged by The Kalgidhar Society because this rural area is economically backward. Another reason being that family members should attend the Gurbani Kirtan and spiritual discourses instead of being busy in the arrangements.

Recently, Akal Samaj Sudhar Sangat was invited by Bhai Mewa Singh to perform Gurbani Kirtan at his residence at village Chathhay (Sangrur). Kirtan of Asa Di Var was performed by the Jatha followed by Anand Sahib, Ardas and Hukamnama. On this occasion, Dr. Gurbakhsh Singh USA (Retd. Dean of Punjab Agricultural University) exhorted the sangat to be the true Sikhs of Guru by denouncing the menace of drug-addiction and female foeticide which have become a big stigma on the present society. Dr. Gurbakhsh Singh Ji, who has traveled widely in European and Asian countries, said, “I feel ashamed when someone asks me whether I am from that Punjab which has the highest consumption of liquor.” He said that alcoholism and drug-addiction are detrimental not only to our body and soul, but they also ruin the families of the victims of drug-addiction. An alcoholic loses respect in family & society and also becomes ungrateful to the Almighty who has given him this precious life.

Exhorting the sangat to denounce alcoholism and drug-addiction, Dr. Gurbakhsh Singh said, “We call ourselves the Sikhs of Guru Gobind Singh who sacrificed his entire family for the welfare of the humanity. Can’t we denounce the alcoholism and drug-addiction? The society can get rid of this menace only if we follow Gurbani and become Amritdhari Singhs.” Influenced by the views expressed by Dr. Gurbakhsh Singh Ji, Bhai Mewa Singh and his family resolved to become Amritdhari Singhs and tread the path of Gurmat.

On another occasion, Akal Samaj Sudhar Sangat performed Kirtan of Asa Di Var at the residence of Bhai Ran Singh of the same village. On the conclusion of the proceedings, Ran Singh’s son Harpreet Singh, who had become ‘patit Sikh’, resolved to become Amritdhari Singh along with his parents.
