Rating of Wayne State University

  1. Of America's more than 2100 four-year colleges and universities, the Carnegie Commission has designated only 125 public and private universities as research institutions.  Of these, only 88, including WSU, are classified as ‘Research University Category 1’ (To be included in this category, universities must annually award 50 or more doctoral degrees and receive at least $40 million in federal government support).  In 2003, WSU awarded 200 doctoral degrees; way above the national average, and research support exceeded way beyond the specified amount, and ranked among top 100 universities in total research funds.
  2. WSU ranks in top 20 nationally in student enrollment. Current enrollment is more than 33,000. Out of this, 20,000 are undergraduates and more than 13,000 are postgraduate students (19,000 women and 14,000 men).
  3. WSU awards annually 600 full tuition scholarships to academically gifted students.  It ranks #1 in this category in the nation.
  4. WSU ranks #6 in the nation for advanced degrees conferred each year.
  5. According to National Science Foundation, WSU is among the top 50 universities, nationally, in research.
  6. WSU’s College of Engineering designed ‘The Hazardous Waste Management Program’to be taught to all units of the U.S. Department of Interior for U.S. government, including Bureau of Land Management.
  7. WSU's College of Engineering influences automobile designs in Detroit (Michigan), the home of U.S. Automobile Industry.
  8. WSU employs more than 8,000 persons, including administrators, faculty, and others.
  9. WSU generates close to 5,000,000 dollars for the Detroit Economy.
It is, certainly, the first such example, where a major American Research University has signed MOU with a High School (Akal Academy Baru Sahib).
